Deinstitunalisation of people taken out from specialized institutions by building of ‘Sheltered House’ in Municipality of Sliven

Since November, 2008 Marie Curie Association participates as a partner in a national project supporting deinstitunalisation of people with mental disabilities by accommodating them in a newly created sheltered house which responses to their specific needs.

Another local partner is the NGO “Initiative and empathy”. These organisations have different roles in the project according to their experience and expertise. Marie Curie Association, for example, is engaged with developing and applying of system for monitoring and internal evaluation of the project activities. “Initiative and empathy” foundation makes the project popular on local and national level. The training of the staff of the institution where the future residents of the Sheltered House are taken out, their preparation for their future way of living, the selection and the training of the team of the sheltered house together with all other remaining project activities are responsibility of Municipality of Sliven.
In short, the main objective of the project is: stabilizing of the system for increasing of the prosperity and deinstitutionalization of people with disabilities accommodated in specialized institutions for children on the territory of Sliven Municipality through services in the community.
Another specific objective is: giving opportunities for using the social service “sheltered house” for children accommodated in Home for Mentally Deficient Children – Kermen and also making the model “sheltered house” popular and informing local community about the start of the activity of the social institution.
